We've been studying the solar system in science. I found some planet coloring pages here  and had the kids color with crayon and then put the planets in order on a piece of blue construction paper. I would have preferred black paper, but I didn't have any at the time. Also... I didn't cut the blue paper long enough for the kids to fit the planets, so they are a little squished.

We did two projects for Christmas. One was to make "elfies" and use them to make Christmas Cards for the parents. For the picture, I used the stickers that I get of their school portraits. For the elf body, I used this template. I had to resize the image until it was small enough to fit with the head. Here is how mine turned out:

We also made reindeer ornaments. I bought an assortment of colored ornaments from Michael's at 70% off! Score! Note: lighter colors work better for this. You have to do this one over two days. Day one: use your thumb and brown paint to make the reindeer heads. I let them do as many as they wanted. Let this dry. Day two: we used black Sharpie to draw the antlers and the eyes and nose and a red sharpie for Rudolph's nose. I would have preferred using puff paint for this step, but I just didn't have the time to get it together. Regardless, they turned out really cute. We wrapped them in tissue paper and tied that with red ribbon when they were complete.

Here is one of the completed ornaments:

Have a safe and Merry Christmas everyone. I am looking forward to two weeks of relaxation! :)

I am officially on Thanksgiving break for an entire week. I have never been so ready for a break. With report cards and parent conferences done, I finally have time to breathe!

We've been working on fractions (dun dun dun) in math. I found this great turkey activity for factoring on TPT. I really liked it a lot, but I wanted my kiddos to get more practice with fractions. So, I modified it slightly. I had them write a simple fraction on the body of the turkey, and then they had to write an equivalent fraction on each of the 5 leaves. I really love how they look up on the cabinets (I'm out of wall space) and the colors are so fun!

Veteran's Day

Happy Veteran's Day to all of our military men and women. Thank you for your service and sacrifices. I am extremely proud to be a Blue Star Sister as my brother serves in the USAF. I know that it isn't easy for him to be away from his wife and kids, but I am so proud of the man that he is.

Unfortunately, this was the one and only day that I was able to wear this dress. At lunch that day, my tomato basil soup decided to explode everywhere! I told my kids that my dress was hungry. I tried my best to get the stains out, but it was no use. Luckily the dress was on clearance!

Mini-museum

My kids studied the early Native Americans for their first Social Studies unit. As a culminating project, we hosted a mini-museum. Each student had previously selected a tribe, wrote a research essay, and then created some sort of artifact to go with their essay. I was really impressed with how the artifacts turned out and I wanted to share them with others.

One of my favorite memories from elementary school was creating a living history Egyptian museum. I really wanted my kids to be able to do the same. Since this was the first big thing we've done this year, I decided to only invite a couple classes to view the projects. It was really great to see my kids teaching some younger students about their tribes. They loved answering all the questions that they had. I was really proud of them and I can't wait for us to do another kind of museum like this in the future.

Here are some photos:

13.1

Last year, on a whim, I signed up for a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. My nephew was a patient there before he passed away from Neuroblastoma in 2009, so it is important for me to give back to the hospital that gave him and my family so much. Thanks to the generosity of my friends and family, I have been able to raise over $4,000 total for this amazing hospital.

After my first 1/2 marathon, I guess you could say that I got the "bug." Today I finished my 3rd one. Having barely trained for this one (as in maybe running 5 times total), this was by far the most challenging thing I've done yet. While my time wasn't fantastic (2:29), I am still thrilled to have accomplished another goal and I know that I really pushed myself for this one. Earlier I said that this was it for running, but we'll see how long that lasts. (:

Crossing the finish line.

View from mile 6. That's SF in the background.

Another view from the course: under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Happy Halloween! If you can't tell, I was Mary Poppins. If you can't tell because (like my students), you've never seen Mary Poppins, shame on you! Go watch it now! This was not my intended costume at all. I was planning on being Alice but, of course, I waited until the day before Halloween to start gathering my costume necessities. I spent 3 1/2 hours going to 7 different stores (2 stores twice!) and had no luck finding a white frilly apron. So, I settled on using things from my closet  and a couple thrift store finds to create this outfit. I should have just thought of this in the first place and saved myself a whole lot of time and headache. I am disappointed that I didn't have the hat and umbrella though. That would have truly made me recognizable. I did have a great coat that I was able to wear in the morning. One of my kids asked if I was Nanny McPhee! A couple teachers thought I was a school marm. Next year I'm going to plan early!

Filthy Fifty

Today's CrossFit WOD was a killer. The name is exactly what it was, diiiiirty. The time cap for the WOD was 35 minutes and I barely got it in at 33:40. The burpees at the end literally almost killed me. Still, I never imagined that I would ever be able to do 10 of these without dying, let alone 50. After 6 months of CrossFit, I am pretty impressed with what my body is capable of doing.
